Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae
Heteronympha merope
A female Common Brown 1,500 metres up Mount Buffalo revealing how cryptic she is with wings closed.
On landing, the female usually opens and closes her wings once or twice and then shuts them, and they stay shut.
If you don't keep an eye on where she landed, finding her again can be almost impossible, and if you're waiting for her to open her wings again, you'll be waiting a long time, and when she does it will be to fly.
